About Milo Baughman:
Milo Ray Baughman, Jr. (October 7, 1923 – July 23, 2003) was born in Kansas and was one of Americas’ leading mid-century modern furniture designers of the 1950sthroughh to his death in 2003. His designs were distictive and functional and his furniture was designed to work from any and every angle it is viewed from. His attention to detail in that regard was second to none. Contemporary furniture makers and dealers continue to copy, reinvent, and revive his work in the new and vintage markets and there are many pieces attributed to Milo Baughman that are unlikely to have been designed by him at all. His name as become synonymous with a particular look and style and anything within that genre seem to now be called:”in the style of” Baughman. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, as they say.
Baughman designed for a number of furniture companies starting in the mid-1940s until his death, including Mode Furniture, Glenn of California, The Inco Company, Pacific Iron, Murray Furniture of Winchendon, Arch Gordon, George Kovacs, Directional, and Drexel, among others. He is most famous, however, for his longtime association with Thayer Coggin Inc., of High Point, which began in 1953 and lasted until his death in 2003.
He also lectured broadly on the state of modern design, extolling the positive benefits of good design on the lives of human beings, and helping to define and shape the discussion for years to come.
